Our kids have been cooking more lately, and while I love watching them learn in the kitchen, I also want it to stay fun rather than just a way to prepare food. When we found the adorable 50 Fixes for Brownie Mixes cookbook by Aimee from Like Mother Like Daughter, it felt perfect for our Friday movie nights and a great way to spark their creativity while spending time together.

We value family time and try to teach our kids that siblings can be best friends, so cooking together has become another meaningful way for them to bond. They can choose any recipe from the book as long as they make it side by side, and their latest creation, brownie batter dip, was incredibly delicious. The whole cookbook is filled with beautiful photos, simple recipes, and so many brownie-inspired treats, which also happens to be Cade’s biggest weakness!

This decadent dessert dip is your new go to when you want a quick appetizer, a fun no bake dessert, or a crowd pleasing treat for a partypotluck, or last minute gathering. Simple to whip up, endlessly dippable, and always delicious, this brownie batter dip is guaranteed to be a favorite on any dessert table.

Brownie Batter Dessert Dip Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make this chocolate dessert dip:

  • Cream Cheese: full fat, softened to room temperature
  • Cool Whip: let it thaw so it’s not frozen and clumpy when you mix it in
  • Boxed Brownie Mix: any brand will do but our favorite is Ghirardelli
  • Milk: helps thin the dip out
  • Mini Chocolate Chips: These are optional but we love the texture it adds

A Note on Cream Cheese

Carrian Cheney

For the richest, creamiest chocolate dip, you’ll want to use full-fat cream cheese that comes in a brick. The cream cheese also needs to come to room temperature before making this easy holiday dessert, otherwise the dip won’t whip up correctly.

How to Make Brownie Batter Dessert Dip

This truly is such an easy dessert dip recipe! It’s great for a simple Valentine’s Day dessert or if you just want a snack for your family movie night, this creamy brownie batter dip is a must!

Exact instructions and measurements are included in the recipe card below, but here’s a brief explanation of how we make this brownie batter dip:

  1. Cream: Using an electric hand mixer, cream the softened cream cheese until smooth.
  2. Mix: Add in the Cool Whip.
  3. Incorporate: Add the brownie mix and milk.
  4. Fold: Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Serve: Enjoy with your favorite snacks!

An Important Note:

Carrian Cheney

You’ll be adding the boxed brownie mix to the chocolate dessert dip as a dry ingredient. Do NOT add the oil, eggs, or water that the box calls for! Just dump the mix straight from the box into the dip.

What to Serve with Brownie Batter Dessert Dip

You may be tempted to leave out those mini chocolate chips, but do not do it!!! They take the recipe from good to amazing. It breaks up the flavor and I found myself digging for them.

If you don’t like chocolate chips (who are you?!?!), try mixing in crushed Oreos. That would be fabulous! Other delicious mix-ins to try – mini m&m’s, peanut butter chips, Reese’s Pieces, or Heath Bits.

One of the things I love most about this easy chocolate dessert is that it pairs well with just about anything, making it perfect for serving with a variety of dippers. Some of our favorites include pretzels or pretzel chips, cinnamon sugar pita chips, fresh fruit like strawberries, banana, and apple slices, cookies (store-bought or homemade), vanilla wafers, marshmallows, and classic graham crackers.

Storing Brownie Batter Dip

Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. It will keep for up to 4 days but it tastes the best and has the best texture within 24 hours of making it.

Brownie Batter Dip FAQs

Can I Use Homemade Whipped Cream Instead of Cool Whip?

We’ve only ever made this edible brownie batter dip recipe as written, so I can’t say for sure. You may be able to use homemade whipped cream in place of the Cool Whip whipped topping but make sure it is stabilized whipped cream so it holds its structure. Please let me know if you try this method!

Can I Make This Ahead of Time?

Yes! This easy party dessert can be made up to one day in advance. You’ll want to wrap it with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it.

Do I Need to Heat-Treat the Brownie Mix?

I’ve never had issues using raw brownie mix, but if you want to be safe, you can heat-treat it.

Oven: Spread the mix on a baking sheet and bake at 300°F for about 10 minutes.
Microwave: Heat the mix in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until it reaches 160°F.

Let it cool completely before adding it to the dip.

Can I Freeze Brownie Batter Dessert Dip?

No, I don’t recommend freezing this chocolate dip. The cream cheese will break down in the freezer and the dip will change texture once thawed.

Indulge in the rich, chocolatey goodness of this irresistible brownie batter dip. Perfect for parties or as a quick and easy dessert, this recipe is sure to please your taste buds.

  2. Kathleen says:

Is there any issue with the flour in the brownie mix not being cooked in this recipe? In regards to food poisoning? I really want to make this, but don’t want anyone to get I’ll from it.

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Hi Kathleen! We have never had an issue with that as it’s so rare, but if you are worried about it, you can bake the dry brownie mix at 180 degrees for 40 minutes beforehand. Enjoy!

I made this with my boyfriend a little while ago, and it was heavenly. I’m going to make it again, but I was wondering, do you have to use cool whip? I was going to make homemade whipped cream to add into the dip. Would that still work?

  5. Barbara says:

How long will this recipe keep in the refrigerator? This is the first time to make it.

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Hi Barbara! It will last 3-4 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

  6. Janine says:

Hello, this recipe looks fantastic! I’m going to try it this weekend but I have a couple quick questions.
You’re supposed to mix the cream cheese and the cool whip together with the hand mixer prior to adding the brownie mix, right? Normally, I would mix the brownie mix and the cream cheese together and then fold in the cool whip so it doesn’t lose its fluff. Is there a sciencey or textural reason for mixing in the cool whip with the hand mixer?
Also, I currently only have heavy whipping cream and almond milk in the house. Rather than buying milk for just 2 Tbsp, could I use one of those other alternatives?
    Thanks!

    1. Sweet Basil says:

I have found that Cool Whip holds up just fine with a hand mixer, but you could use the hand mixer just on the cream cheese and then fold in the Cool Whip. The cream cheese just needs some heavy beating to smooth out. You would use either the heavy cream or the almond milk! Almond milk would be healthier but heavy cream would be my choice! Same measurement for either!

  7. Kristi Atcheson says:

Can you freeze the brownie dip?  Just wondering if it will separate when thawed.

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Hi Kristi! I wouldn’t recommend it. The cream cheese will break down and separate when it thaws.
