This easy Korean ground beef recipe is one of our go-to weeknight dinners. It’s quick, full of flavor, and light on the budget but heavy on that sweet-and-savory goodness you love in Korean-inspired dishes. The kind of meal that gets everyone around the table with zero complaints – and bonus points, it freezes like a dream.
There comes a point where you’re standing in the kitchen staring at that pack of ground beef, thinking… no more casseroles, tacos, or soup. That’s exactly where I was when this dish was born. I needed something simple, family-friendly, and packed with flavor – but still made with ingredients I already had in the pantry. Enter this tasty little twist: Korean ground beef.

I grew up on the same plate every night – meat, veggie, carb – and now, as a mom, I do the exact same thing with a few upgrades to the classics my mom made. Think: Cheesy Ground Beef and Rice Casserole, Pork Chops and Rice, Stew, Potato Soup, and Idaho Tacos (don’t knock it until you try it).
But just because it isn’t 1999 anymore doesn’t mean moms stopped needing quick, budget-friendly meals. It just means we’re giving them a modern update. This Korean ground beef recipe is our take on bulgogi – only faster, cheaper, and made for busy nights when you need protein, nutrition, and comfort in a single bowl.
You can jazz it up with mushrooms, peas, or peppers (I’ve tried it all), but honestly, it doesn’t need anything more than ground beef, sauce, and rice. It’s ridiculously easy to make, reheats like a dream, and if you’ve got leftovers? Pop them in the freezer for another day.

Before You Begin…
If you’re planning to serve this Korean ground beef over rice, then the first thing you will want to do is get your rice cooking. That way the rice will be ready when the beef is finished.
Ingredients for Korean Ground Beef
This recipe keeps things simple, affordable, and full of flavor – exactly how we like our weeknight dinners. The ingredients are easy to find, likely already in your pantry, and come together in a way that hits all the right notes: savory, sweet, a little tangy, and packed with protein. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Canola or Vegetable Oil: For sautéing the garlic and beef – use what you have on hand.
- Ground Beef: You can also use ground chuck or swap in ground turkey for a leaner option with fewer calories.
- Garlic: Brings bold flavor and depth to the meat.
- Soy Sauce: Adds that salty, umami richness – low sodium soy sauce works great here, too.
- Orange Juice: A touch of acidity and sweetness to brighten everything up.
- Brown Sugar: Balances out the salt and adds depth to the sauce.
- Sweet Chili Sauce: A little sweet, a little spicy – it’s the secret to that addictive flavor.
- Toasted Sesame Oil: For that nutty, unmistakable Korean-style aroma.
- Cornstarch: Helps the sauce thicken and cling to the beef.
- Green Onions: Add a pop of freshness and color – plus they’re great for garnish.
Everything comes together in one bowl, no fuss. And while the ingredient list is short and sweet, it still delivers big flavor with solid nutrition – protein, fiber, and satisfying carbohydrates all included.
The measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post. You can also save or print the recipe there.

How to Make Korean Ground Beef
This is a great weeknight meal because it comes together in about 20 minutes. The steps are super easy. Here is what to expect:
- Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil. Toss in the ground beef and garlic, then cook, until it’s fully browned. Drain off the grease.
- Make the sauce: Whisk all the ingredients for the sauce together and set aside until the meat is cooked.
- Combine: Add the sauce to the ground beef and let it simmer until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Serve it up: Spoon the beef over rice and top with sliced green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Add some veggies on the side or pile it into lettuce wraps – whatever makes you happy.
Pro tip: Want to level things up? Top your Korean ground beef bowl with a fried egg, or serve it alongside some steamed broccoli for a boost of protein and fiber that makes it feel like a seriously well-rounded dinner. And if you’re into a little heat, a sprinkle of red pepper flakes does the trick beautifully.

What to Serve with Korean Ground Beef
We like to serve this delicious Korean ground beef over cooked white rice. It would also be great with some Asian noodles like ramen, udon, rice noodles or chow mein noodles.
A side of steamed broccoli, sauteed snap peas, or grilled asparagus would all work great. Any vegetable side will totally work, or our yummy Asian cucumber salad!
You could also serve this ground beef in lettuce leaves to make them lettuce wraps just like your chicken lettuce wraps!
Storage Tips
This recipe is a great recipe for freezing either before or after cooking it (perfect for meal prep!). To freeze it before cooking, whisk all the sauce ingredients together and freeze the sauce. Then when you are ready to make this recipe, pull the sauce out of the freezer. Let it sit at room temperature for about a half hour and then brown the meat combine. So easy!!
To freeze it after cooking it, let it cool completely and then store the ground beef in a ziploc bag or freezer safe container. It will keep for up to 3 months.
If you have some leftovers that you plan to eat in the next few days, store them in the refrigerator. They will keep for 4-5 days. Reheat them in the microwave for a quick lunch or dinner. You can also reheat them on the stove top. You may want to add a little beef broth to keep it from drying out.

This Korean beef recipe nails the takeout flavor you crave – without the mystery ingredients, surprise calories, or disappointing soggy sides. It’s fast, full of real nutrition, and turns ground beef into a meal that says, “I totally planned this,” even if you didn’t.

I made this for my boyfriend but I put it on a tortilla with Mexican rice and cheese and he loved it
Thank you so much for the feedback! I’m so glad it was a hit!
I want to make this recipe, but I just realized I don’t have soy sauce like I thought. I am snowed in and cannot get to the store. What do you suggest as a substitution?
Hi Kelly! The best substitute for soy sauce is tamari or fish sauce. I hope this helps!
While I have not made this recipe yet I have read over it. I am confused as to what the green onions are used for . The recipe reads to slice onions and have extra for garnish. Is it supposed to be cooked with the ground beef ? And why would you use oil to cook your beef when there is plenty from the beef. To me this reads like a novice trying to write a recipe and not a professional. I will make it and comment after I’m done.
Hi Teri! The green onions are for garnish after the ground beef has been cooked. I’ve clarified that in the instructions. I apologize for the confusion! I’ve found that a little oil in the pan before cooking helps the meat and garlic to not stick and it helps evenly brown the beef. Looking forward to hear what you think when you make it!
I gave it a 2 star the day I made it, but I would say – it definitely tastes better after sitting for 24 hours, the flavor pops. So I have to upgrade to 4 star with caveat to let it rest overnight before eating it
Thanks Katharine! That’s a great tip for our readers!
I thought it would be so flavorful, and the final product was almost bland. I was disappointed. My 18 year old son said he would eat it again, but not regularly
Hi Katharine! So sorry for the disappointment! We’ve gotten almost nothing but rave reviews for this one.
second day – review changed – I’d delete this review if I knew how
Easy quick and really tasty. This is a keeper
Thank you so much Gaye!!
This was simple, quick and so delish! My whole family enjoyed it. Thanks!!
Yay! Thank you Gloria!
I am so happy I discovered this recipe. It’s delicious! I added some minced ginger root the first time I made it and loved it so much I made it again! This time, adding chopped mushrooms into the meat as well. So so good definitely going to continue to use this recipe as a foundation for further experimentations!
Thank you so much Fran! Love the addition of mushrooms to the meat! I’m trying that next time!
Just made this, but cut recipe in half for just 2 of us. It’s SOOO good!!! Garnished w toasted sesame seeds and more green onion. YUM
Sounds perfect! Thank you so much Lisa!
This recipe is perfect exactly as written. It is so good that I make a double batch and freeze some for later. That’s 4 lbs of ground beef! Quite an investment these days. Lol. But worth every penny. My family loves it. We eat it over rice. Thanks for the fabulous dinner idea!
Thank you so much Tammy! So glad you love this recipe as much as we do! Yes, the price of everything these days is so frustrating!!
