What is the Difference Between Old Fashioned and Quick Oats?

Old fashioned (or rolled) oats are rolled into flakes and stay fresher longer. Quick oats are cut into smaller pieces and rolled thinner. This helps them cook faster, but they won’t have as much texture as old fashioned oats. We like old fashioned oats in this recipe because they keep their texture even with the long cooking time. Quick oats tend to get too mushy for my liking when cooked in the slow cooker.

Can I Use Steel Cut Oats in this Recipe?

Yes definitely! Steel cut oats are great in this recipe. Use the same measurement of oatmeal. You may need to add another half hour so to the cook time, but all the other ingredients can stay the same. Steel cut oats have a great texture and a nuttier flavor that goes great with apples!

What Type of Apples Should I Use?

We love, love, love Rave apples from Costco in this recipe. Honey Crisp is also great, and Braeburns or Pink Lady will work just fine too.

Toppings

Oh I’m allllllll about the toppings for oatmeal! We have caramel listed in the ingredients for topping, but the options are endless really. Here are a few more ideas:

  • Cinnamon
  • Honey
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Raisins or craisins (or any dried fruit for that matter)
  • Fresh blue berries
  • Banana slices

How to Make Apple Pie Oatmeal on the Stove Top

If you want this oatmeal in a little less time than 7 hours, you can make it on the stove top too. Cook the apples as stated in the instructions but cook them for longer so they are fully cooked through. Then add everything to your pot. Bring everything to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium low and it cook for 20-25 minutes.

How Long Will Cooked Oatmeal Keep?

Left over oatmeal should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-6 days.

Can You Reheat Oatmeal?

Oatmeal can be reheated in a microwave, but add a little splash of milk to make it creamy again. Stir well after heating.

Is Oatmeal Healthy?

Oats are some of the healthiest grains on earth.

It is gluten free and has many health benefits including, weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of heart disease.

I know I’ve been talking about this recipe as a breakfast recipe, and it is, but it also a super easy breakfast for dinner option! Start this apple pie slow cooker oatmeal in the morning and pile up a bowl full for dinner! Added bonus – a scrumptious smelling house all day long!

  1. Laurie Wirtz says:

Can you make this in an instant pot?

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Hi Laurie! That’s a great question! I actually haven’t ever tried it, but I don’t see why not! I would spray the inside of the instant pot with cooking spray. Cook the apples on the stove top as written in the instructions, then add everything to the instant pot. Cook on high for 4 minutes and let it release naturally. Stir everything together and serve hot!

  2. Alice says:

Can I cut half the milk with water to reduce calories?

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Yes, but you will lose some of the richness and flavor. You could also use almond milk or just a low fat milk.

  3. Teresa says:

Could you use quick cook oats?

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Hi Teresa! Yes, absolutely. They will be pretty mushy though and won’t have much texture.

  4. Susan Alicandro says:

I enjoy so many of your recipes, and this looks like one I’d love to try. I am wondering if the nutritional information is correct. Is it really 946 calories per serving? Thank you.

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Thank you so much Susan! Nope, that was totally wrong. It had calculated one the ingredients incorrectly. Should be corrected now…326 calories per serving. Much better!

  5. Annalie says:

If I double this recipe, will the slow cook time stay the same?

    1. Sweet Basil says:

Yes, the cooking time will be the same.
