Italian sliders are the perfect party dish for a Super Bowl get together! You start with slider buns and layer them with Italian deli meats like salami, pepperoni, and ham, then add melted provolone cheese.

For extra flavor, you drizzle some garlic parmesan sauce on top, then bake them until golden and crispy. To finish, load them up with your favorite sandwiches toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, pepperoncinis and black olives mixed with a creamy Italian dressing. These sliders are delicious, easy to assemble, and perfect for a crowd!

I’m going to fail you all a bit when it comes to the Super Bowl…we don’t watch it. It hasn’t always been easy, and it was an important decision for our family to not watch the Super Bowl. I know, don’t hate me, but Sunday is our one day set aside for our family and religion. However, we still enjoy a lot of good food (check out our Super Bowl Food Recipe Roundup for more ideas!), so I really wanted to step up a bit and provide our readers with more options for the big day. Food is everything for a football gathering, am I RIGHT?!

I decided to take a nod from our famous ham and cheese sliders and make a new version. Because of my love of chopped salads and the goodness of Italian delis I decided to jump into a fresh version of baked sliders.

What Do I Need to Make Italian Sliders?

Head to the deli and grab a few slices of your favorite Italian meats and some provolone. Then almost everything else you’ll either have at home already or you can grab it in the produce section. Here is everything you’ll need…

  • Hawaiian Slider Buns: You can either grab a pack of rolls at the store or make homemade Hawaiian sweet rolls.
  • Provolone: Grab it from the deli when you get your meats.
    • NOTE: If you aren’t a provolone fan, use mozzarella cheese instead.
  • Meats: Ham, Pepperoni and Salami

Garlic Parmesan Glaze

  • Butter: the base for the glaze on top of the buns
  • Parmesan: freshly and finely grated
  • Garlic Herb Seasoning: We love Johnny’s Garlic Spread, but any garlic herb seasoning will work great.

Toppings (Grinder Salad)

  • Mayonnaise: adds creaminess to the dressing
  • Italian Dressing: adds flavor
  • Sliced Black Olives: buy a can of sliced olives or slice whole olives yourself
  • Red Onion: I like them diced pretty small so they blend right in.
  • Shredded Lettuce: shred your own romaine lettuce or buy a bag of pre-shredded
  • Tomatoes: Roma or vine ripe tomatoes work great.
  • Pepperoncini Peppers: a signature of Italian sandwiches and salads that add a little heat
    • NOTE: If pepperoncinis are too spicy for you, use banana peppers or dill pickles.

The measurements and details for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card down below.

How to Make Baked Italian Sliders

Something so delicious shouldn’t be so easy! Baked slider sandwiches are one of my favorite ways to feed a crowd something warm and delicious. Here are the step-by-step instructions…

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 350℉. Cut the rolls horizontally and place them in the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Layer: Place a layer of provolone cheese on the bottom half of the rolls then top with all three meats. Add the top rolls and gently slice through the seams so that each sandwich is separate.
    • PRO TIP:
  3. Bake: Whisk together the melted butter, parmesan and garlic herb seasoning and then brush over the tops of the sliders. Bake for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Make the Chopped Salad: Whisk together the mayo and Italian dressing in a small bowl then stir in the olives (if using) and onions. Add the lettuce, tomatoes and pepperoncini peppers to a large bowl and then toss with the dressing.
  5. Finish the Sandwiches: When the sliders are done baking, carefully remove the tops and add the chopped salad. Put the tops back on and enjoy!

Totally Customizable!

Carrian is all about the olives while I’d rather have more spice. Create these sliders to your own tastes by making substitutions like, sun dried tomatoes, peppers, different meats and cheeses until you’ve made the sandwich of your dreams.

What is a Slider?

slider is an American term for a small sandwich, typically around 2 in (5.1 cm) across, made with a bun. The term primarily refers to small hamburgers like our cheeseburger sliders, but can also cover any mini sandwiches made with a slider roll.

What to Serve with Italian Sliders

Don’t limit yourself to just the Super Bowl for these Italian sub sliders! They are great for a quick weeknight dinner, an appetizer for a party or for a potluck with friends. If you’re serving Italian sandwich sliders as a main dish, here are some side dishes to serve with them:

Can Italian Sliders Be Made Ahead?

Individual components of the sliders can be made ahead of time, but I wouldn’t recommend fully assembling them. You can slice the buns and add the cheese and meats then put the tops on and cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to 4-5 hours.

Do not add the garlic butter mixture on top of the buns until right before baking. The chopped grinder salad could be made an hour or so ahead of time, but I wouldn’t make it too much earlier than that or the lettuce will start to wilt and brown.

Storing and Reheating

If possible, don’t store constructed sliders. The moisture of all the vegetables and the dressing will make them quite soggy. Store the lettuce mixture separately and add right before serving.

Sliders that have been stored with just the meat and cheese can be reheated in the oven or in an air fryer. Add the chopped salad on before serving. If you have leftover sliders that are fully assembled, store them in an airtight container in the fridge. They will keep for about a day and I would just eat them cold.

Get ready for game day with this delicious and easy Super Bowl Italian sliders recipe! Packed with flavor and perfect for sharing with friends and family.

Honey Avocado Sauce

My friend introduced me to the ULTIMATE sandwich spread- Honey Avocado- and I cannot stop making it!

This sauce is the real deal. I mix mayo, avocado, honey and lemon juice with a little garlic in a blender to cream everything together. It’s simple, lasts for days and tastes better than any sandwich shop. Swap in any fillings or breads you like, but don’t skip that special-sauce!

Make it on 7 Grain Bread or Scroll down to watch on Focaccia!

Turkey Bacon Avocado Sandwich Ingredients

  • Favorite bread: Go for a good sturdy 7 grain or focaccia– trust me.
  • Havarti cheese: Mild and creamy; a great complement, but not necessary.
  • Bacon: Make it on a sheet pan, starting in a cold oven or pan for ultimate fat-rendering-crispness.
  • Deli turkey: Choose fresh deli slices or use leftover Thanksgiving turkey if you’ve got some!
  • Avocado: Use a perfectly ripe avocado for a creamier texture; slice thinly.
  • Tomato: Always sprinkle a little salt and pepper on tomatoes in a sandwich!
  • Greens: I love to used mixed greens or peppery arugula, but anything will do! Romaine or green leaf lettuce would be great!
  • Honey Avocado sauce: Blend together the ingredients in a small bowl for the ultimate sandwich spread!

How to Make Turkey Avocado Sandwiches with Honey Avocado Dressing

  1. Make sauce: Blend together the sauce ingredients and store in the fridge until ready to use.
  2. Assemble: Spread sauce on BOTH slices of bread. On one slice, layer greens, cheese (if using), turkey, crisp bacon, avocado and tomato (don’t forget the S&P!).

Variations

The beauty of a sandwich is that you can totally customize it to your liking. Omit certain toppings or add other toppings to make it just how you want it. I’d highly recommend NOT omitting the avocado sauce on this sandwich, but if you wanted to added some other toppings, here are some ideas:

  • Cheese: Swap the Havarti for Gouda, Provolone or Swiss cheese
  • Red Onions
  • Black Olives
  • Mustard or Honey Mustard

What To Serve Alongside The Avocado Turkey Sandwich

Recipe Tip

If you want an extra boost in texture and flavor, toast the multigrain bread and spread a little butter on it before assembling the sandwich. Yowza it’s good!

I adore this Grilled Chicken Avocado Sandwich Recipe. They are so simple, but completely delicious. I hate spicy, but for some reason I love the kick of cayenne in the spicy mayo with the cool avocado and flaky, buttery, amazingly delish puff pastry. It’s pretty much perfection.

The first time I had this recipe I knew it looked good, but it seemed a tad odd to use puff pastry for a sandwich. I am forever converted. You truly must try it yourself to understand, but it’s quite amazing.

Have you ever even had Puff pastry? It’s purdy darn delicious. We don’t make our own. We let the professionals handle it, and Pepperidge Farm does it so well! They make a fantastic puff pastry, and so I stick with them.

This recipe is adapted from Giada De Laurentiis, so unfortunately I cannot take the credit, but I’m all about sharing recipes that are delicious even if I didn’t think it up myself. We had already been inspired by a sandwich and had puff pastry lying around so when I saw her show making something similar I had to pounce!

Ingredients for Grilled Chicken Avocado Sandwich Recipe

It really doesn’t take many ingredients at all to make these grilled chicken sandwiches, so let’s run through everything you’ll need:

  • Puff Pastry: You can find puff pastry in the freezer section of the grocery store by pie crusts.
  • Chicken Breasts: boneless and skinless
  • Montreal Chicken Seasoning: a blend of spices and herbs like garlic, onion, salt, paprika, orange peel, and bell pepper
  • Kosher Salt: adds flavor
  • Olive Oil: helps grill the chicken
  • Mayonnaise: whatever your favorite brand is
  • Cayenne Pepper: adds some heat to the mayo spread
  • Baby Spinach: adds freshness
  • Avocado: adds creamy richness to the sandwich

The measurements for all the ingredients can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

How to Make Chicken Avocado Sandwiches

Like I mentioned above, if you’ve never tried a sandwich on puff pastry, then your mind is about to be blown! The puff pastry is so flaky and buttery. We start by baking the puff pastry, and then I’ll walk you through the rest of the steps:

  1. Prep: Move the rack of the oven down to the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Bake the Puff Pastry: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Poke the puff pastry pieces all over with a fork. Cover it with another piece of parchment paper and place another baking sheet on top. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden. Let them cool.
  3. Grill the Chicken: While the puff pastry is baking, grill the chicken. Preheat a grill pan and season both sides of the chicken with the Montreal chicken seasoning and salt. Drizzle with a little olive oil too. Grill the chicken until it is cooked through. Once cooked, slice into the thin slices.
  4. Make the Spicy Mayo: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and cayenne.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Place one piece of puff pastry on a plate and spread with a little spicy mayo. Top with three slices of chicken, some spinach and then avocado slices. Spread some mayo on the underside of another piece of puff pastry for the middle layer. Place it down and then spread a little more mayo on top of the puff pastry piece. Repeat the layers and top with a third piece of puff pastry.

All of the instructions can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post. Keep scrolling for all the details.

Can You Grill Chicken in an Oven?

To grill chicken in an oven, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Brush chicken with olive oil and place on a broiler pan. Bake for 10 minutes.

Is Phyllo Dough the Same as Puff Pastry?

Puff pastry dough and phyllo dough are very different. Puff pastry is denser and sturdier than phyllo dough. If used interchangeably, Phyllo dough will yield different results than puff pastry.

Are Avocados Good For You?

Avocados are packed with nearly 20 vitamins and minerals. Avocados are rich in potassium, which helps lower blood pressure. They contain a good amount of fiber, folic acid and vitamins B6, C, E, and K.

Storage Tips

Once this chicken avocado sandwich is assembled, it won’t keep well for very long. The puff pastry gets soggy quickly once the mayo is added. If you want to save the sandwich, store all the components separately and assemble right before serving.

Indulge in a delicious and healthy meal with these grilled chicken avocado sandwiches. Layers of tender chicken, creamy avocado, and fresh spinach make for a satisfying and flavorful dish. You’ll feel like you’re eating at a fancy deli!

Add some tropical flavor and a spicy kick to your next burger with this delicious and saucy pineapple jalapeño turkey burgers. Perfect for summer cookouts or anytime you’re in the mood for a unique and tasty twist on a classic dish.

We had a bunch of family in town a couple weeks back and I was trying to think up something quick and easy to have for dinner. Instantly BBQ came to mind because you can just throw it all on the grill and sides are always easy. I’m not a huge hamburger fan so I changed things up and made them sweet, spicy and saucy.

I loved the juiciness that the Mar A Lago turkey burgers recipe had because of the fruit in it so I threw pineapple into this one. The preserves give it a little heat and sweetness which even our youngest loved. The burgers stay really moist and when you bite into them you get a little sweet and tang from the sauce.

Ingredients for Pineapple Jalapeño Turkey Burgers

These burgers are sweet and tangy and I crave them all summer long! Here is everything you will need:

Burgers

  • Ground Turkey: don’t go too lean or the burgers will be crumbly and dry
  • Salt and Pepper: adds flavor to the meat
  • Hamburger Buns: We prefer brioche for the best flavor and texture.
  • Toppings: Havarti Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato Slices and Red Onion Slices

Sauce

  • Pineapple Jalapeño Preserves: We love Kelly’s brand, but any brand you can find should work great.
  • Spices: Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Ginger
  • Lemon Juice: adds acidity to the sauce
  • Soy Sauce: adds flavor

The measurements and details for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

How to Make Pineapple Jalapeño Turkey Burgers

We have found that chilling the turkey burger patties after they are formed makes all the difference, so be sure to plan that into your prep time. Here are the steps:

  1. Form the Patties: Divide the ground turkey into 4 equal balls and form into patties and cover both sides in salt and pepper.
  2. Refrigerate: Place the patties in a plate, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for an hour.
  3. Make Sauce: While the turkey patties are chilling, make the sauce by adding all the ingredients to a small bowl and whisking everything until well combined.
  4. Grill: Heat the grill to medium-high heat, and grill the patties for 6-8 minutes on each side. Only flip them once and don’t press them.
  5. Stir: Add all the ingredients for the sauce to a sauce pan and whisk together
  6. Assemble: Top each patty with a slice of Havarti cheese and close the lid for a minute or two while the cheese melts. Remove from the grill and place the patties on the buns. Spread sauce all over the top bun, add the lettuce, tomato and onions and top bun.

The complete recipe can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

What to Serve with Jalapeno Turkey Burgers

It is time to bust out all the typical burger side dishes! Here are a few of our favorites:

Of course, you can grab a few bags of your favorite chips and slice up a watermelon if you want to keep it extra simple! Some homemade strawberry ice cream would finish off the meal perfectly too!

Variations

Burgers are so easy to customize to your own liking! For this recipe, you can swap the cheese…pepper jack cheese would be super good! Or change up the toppings…add avocado, a fried egg, or pickled jalapenos for an extra kick.

If you need to make this in the middle of winter and don’t want to grill, it can be cooked on the stove top in a grill pan or cast iron skillet.

Is Ground Turkey Healthier Than Beef?

Ground turkey can be healthier than beef. However, it really depends on the lean meat to fatty meat ratio that you find in the ground turkey or beef that you purchase.

Light meat turkey will always be leaner than dark meat turkey. Extra lean ground beef has about the same fat content as ground turkey. Lean ground turkey can be quite dry so take that into consideration as well!

Why Do Ground Meat Patties Fall Apart?

Ground meat that is not really cold will fall apart easily. After you form your patties, put them in the refrigerator to cool completely.

Also, do not keep flipping them. To keep patties from falling apart, cook halfway, flip and finish cooking.

Storage Tips

Once a turkey burger is completely assembled, it won’t keep very well. If you want to store just the patties, store them in an airtight container in the fridge. They will keep for up to 5 days. You can reheat them in the microwave or in a skillet on the stovetop. Assemble the burgers with all the toppings fresh.

If you have leftover sauce, it will keep for up to 2 weeks.

I’m kind of in love with this turkey burger. I hardly ever eat fajitas, it’s just not a dish that I think about. But I needed something super delicious and comforting and Fajita Mexican Burgers is what happened.

Clearly, based on how over the top this burger is, I was needing comfort. This Mexican turkey burger is unbelievably good. Piled high with sauteed peppers, onions and gooey, colby jack cheese, you’ll be sure to forget all of your problemos.

How to Make Fajita Style Mexican Burgers

These turkey burgers are a mashup between delicious fajitas and a burger. You will sauté peppers and onions and grill seasoned turkey burger patties and then combine them on a toasted bun. Here is a step-by-step guide for making these bold burgers:

  1. Sauté: Drizzle a little oil in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat and then add the onions and peppers when the oil is shimmering. Stir to coat the vegetables in the oil.
  2. Cook: Reduce the heat to medium low and let peppers and onions cook for 15-20 minutes until tender and the onions are translucent and starting to caramelize. Remove the skillet from the heat and move the peppers and onions to a plate and set aside.
  3. Prep: Heat the grill to medium-high heat and grease the grill with oil or cooking spray.
  4. Mix: Add the ground turkey, fajita (or taco) seasoning, diced green chiles and cilantro to a bowl and mix to combine. Then form each patty making a small indentation in the center of each patty.
  5. Grill: Place the burgers on the grill and season each patty with salt and pepper. Cook on each side for 3-4 minutes.
  6. Melt: Place the skillet back on the burner and place a pile of cheese (about 1/2 cup) in the center of the pan. When it is good and melted, pile onions and pepper on top of the cheese and then scoop it all up and place on top of the cooked patty.
  7. Assemble: Put a patty on each toasted bottom bun, top with a pile of the cheesy peppers and onions and spread some of the sauce mixture (see next section) on the toasted top bun. Eat immediately!
    • PRO TIP: Adding a few slices of avocado would be a great addition!

Sauce

  1. Whisk: Add all the ingredients to a small bowl and whisk everything together.

All of the instructions for making these Mexican burgers can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

Are Fajitas Made With Beef?

Fajitas are typically made with grilled strips of beef skirt steak with onions and bell peppers, and served sizzling hot with fresh tortillas, guacamole, sour cream, and salsa. Check out our steak fajitas recipe!

Fajitas can be made with chicken, or they can be vegetarian, with no meat at all. We have a stellar chicken fajitas recipe on the blog too!

Is Lean Ground Turkey Healthier Than Lean Ground Beef?

Ground turkey is usually considered to be more healthy than ground beef. But, it really depends on the amount of fat in the ground meat. Lean ground turkey will be more dry so take that into consideration when you decide the fat content of your ground turkey.

Light meat turkey is leaner than dark meat turkey. Light meat turkey will always be leaner than dark meat turkey and beef.

What is the Difference Between Green and Red Bell Peppers?

The difference between green and red bell peppers is really just the ripeness. Red peppers are just green peppers that have been left to ripen more. The more color in the pepper, the sweeter it is. Yellow is sweeter than green, orange is sweeter than yellow, red is the sweetest.

Can Turkey Mexican Burgers Be Pink?

Turkey burgers should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Turkey can remain pink even after cooking to a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F.

What to Serve with Fajita Mexican Burgers

If you want to go with the burger angle, some hot french fries are always a great side dish for burgers. If you want to take it down the Mexican food route, then here are some of our favorite side dishes:

Storage Tips

Once a fajita turkey burger is completely assembled, it won’t keep very well. If you want to store just the patties and peppers and onions, store them in separate airtight containers in the fridge. They will keep for up to 5 days. You can reheat them in the microwave or in a skillet on the stovetop. Assemble the burgers with all the toppings fresh.

If you have leftover sauce, it will keep for up to 2 weeks.

Add some delicious Mexican flair to your burgers with this fajita-style recipe. Perfect for a summer BBQ or anytime you’re craving a tasty twist on a classic dish.

Looking to give your lunch routine an upgrade? Try my favorite avocado sandwich recipe! With creamy avocado, roasted tomatoes, and a spicy mayo, it’s the perfect combination of flavors and textures.

Years ago I had an amazing sandwich that I’ll never be able to remember everything on it, but one thing stood out, the pickled onions on the charred tomatoes made a magical flavor I never would have expected. This sandwich gives a nod to not only that sandwich but the perfection that comes when you have a perfectly balanced sammy with sweet, salty, crunchy, acidic, toasted and… AVOCADO.

Lately our daughter has been loving avocado toast and so we took the best of her toast discoveries at restaurants with my sandwich memory and created literally the best avocado sandwich ever.

Ingredients for The Best Avocado Sandwich

Sandwiches can be as simple or as loaded as you want them to be, and you can customize to your taste. I’m going to give you my grocery list for this sandwich, and I urge you to make it as written. Each item plays an important role in making this rockstar sammy. Here is your list…

  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • Seven Grain Bread
  • Butter
  • Young Manchego Cheese
  • Fresh Sprouts
  • Microgreens
  • Arugula
  • Avocado
  • Pickled Red Onions
  • Salt and Black Pepper

Spicy Mayo

  • Mayonnaise
  • Hot Sauce
  • Smoked Paprika
  • Chili Powder
  • Juice from Pickled Onions

The measurements and details for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card down at the end of this post.

Picking Perfect Avocados

To find the perfect avocado, use your thumb and forefinger to gently press the top and bottom of the avocado. It should give a little if it’s ready to go. Never press or palm the whole fruit as it will bruise it.

What is the Best Bread for This Sandwich?

My favorite bread for this sandwich is the seven grain bread from Harmon’s here in Utah. In all reality, you could use any type of bread that you want…a multigrain bread, a good whole wheat bread, or heck, even a yummy white bread works great! Ooh, or sourdough bread! I’m trying that next time!

How to Make an Avocado Sandwich

Before you start to make this sandwich, make sure your red onions are pickled and you’ve whisked together the ingredients for the spicy mayo in a small bowl. Here are the steps for each fabulous layer…

  1. Char the Tomatoes: Heat the oven to broil and place the tomatoes on a baking sheet, cut side down. Move the oven rack to the highest position and place the baking sheet in. Keep a close eye on them and cook only until the tomatoes begin to char then remove from the oven.
  2. Toast the Bread: Toast the bread slices. You can either use a toaster or stick them in the broiler with the tomatoes. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread the other side of each piece of bread with the spicy mayo. Add the cheese then the tomatoes, sprouts, micro greens and arugula. Finally add the sliced avocado (you could also mash the avocado with a fork and spread it on) and pickled onions, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with another slice of bread.

Keep scrolling to the end of the post to the recipe card for all the details.

Tips for the Best Sandwiches

You MUST salt and pepper the tomatoes and avocados. It will make all the difference to have a seasoned sandwich. Actually, I think sprouts and microgreens are a must too. Their flavor and texture are game-changers!

What’s the Difference Between Young and Old Manchego?

How long Manchego cheese has aged will greatly affect the flavor of the cheese. Young Manchego cheese has a more mild taste and more creamy texture. Old Manchego has a more bold and nuttier flavor. It is also more firm in texture. I love young for sandwiches and old for salads.

Substitutions and Additions

If you aren’t a Manchego cheese fan, some great substitutes would be havarti or feta cheese.

Some other options for substitutions would be sun dried tomatoes instead of the charred tomatoes, pickles instead of the pickled onions, or any fresh salad greens or spinach for the arugula and microgreens.

You could use lemon juice or pickle juices if they aren’t doing the pickled onions though it will be a mistake because even I LOVED the balance they brought to the dish and I’m not usually an onion on a sandwich gal.

For a heartier sandwich, add some slices of roasted good quality turkey that you get from the deli! Some crispy bacon would also be delicious!

Honestly, I would try it once without making substitutions. It’s that good!

What to Serve with Avocado Sandwiches

A sandwich for lunch usually doesn’t need much, if anything, to go with it. Some carrots or a sliced apple would be perfect alongside it. If you’re serving this sandwich for dinner, you could add a side salad, vegetable, or cup of soup with it. Here are a few ideas:

This delicious and nutritious avocado sandwich recipe is the perfect addition to your day. Whether it’s lunch or a light dinner, it’s sure to be a new family favorite. Packed with protein, healthy fats, and fresh ingredients, it’s sure to become your new favorite meal.

Perfect for any occasion, this recipe will leave your taste buds satisfied. Plus, check out our video tutorial for step-by-step instructions down below.

Easy Cucumber Tea Sandwiches

My mom often worked with a group of young women when I was growing up and on one occasion they held a silly Mother’s Day garden party, complete with garden hats in our backyard. I wanted to go so bad, but I was little and this was something I’d have to wait a few years to attend.

It looked like so much fun to a little girl, and I was beyond thrilled when there were some fresh flowers left over that she let me play with. That’s also the first time I’d ever seen a cucumber finger sandwich and I didn’t know what to make of it. Little white bread squares with a slice of cucumber and plain cream cheese.

The Best Bread for Cucumber Sandwiches

Cade and I both wanted to work with eureka!® Organic Bread, but deciding on a recipe together was tricky. I happened to mention that I remember my Mom having a garden party in our backyard and someone brought cucumber sandwiches and Cade was like, “What’s a cucumber sandwich? Just cucumbers?!” It was decided on, cucumber sandwiches would be our recipe.

With spring in the air, I just had to recreate the classic tea sandwich but with our own twist. Cade was in charge of the bread and I don’t know why, but I was a little nervous he wouldn’t choose a good one, haha I need to be more trusting. He came home with Saaa-Wheat! eureka! Organic Bread because according to him, it’s bursting with rich flavor and tasty goodness and no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. I’m pretty sold on that!

Bread was totally boring and not super good for you when I was little, but I’m loving how many varieties are out there now. If you’re sitting there thinking that you’re a die-hard fan of the processed white stuff, just trust us this one time, it’s ten times more flavorful of a sandwich when you choose a good bread, like eureka!

What’s Needed for This Cucumber Sandwich Recipe?

These cucumber dill sandwiches require just a handful of ingredients, many of which you may have on hand! Here’s what you’ll need to make cucumber finger sandwiches:

  • Neufchatel Cream Cheese: a little lighter than cream cheese, but regular cream cheese can be used
  • Greek Yogurt: lightens up the cream cheese spread and makes the spread more nutritious and fluffier
  • Lemon Juice and Zest: brightens the flavor of the spread
  • Fresh Dill: adds a pop of herbaceous flavor
  • Vinegar: regular white distilled vinegar is all you need
  • Granulated Sugar: adds a little sweetness to balance out the acidity
  • Salt and Black Pepper: adds flavor
  • Cucumber: You can use regular cucumbers or English cucumbers and I prefer to peel them. Cut into thin slices.
  • eureka! Saaa-Wheat Organic Bread: any multigrain bread will also work if you can’t find eureka!

What’s the Difference Between Cream Cheese vs Neufchatel?

We use Neufchatel in these cucumber tea sandwiches because it’s a little healthier than regular cream cheese. So what’s the difference between cream cheese and neufchatel? American Cream Cheese and American Neufchatel are practically the same thing!

Or, at least they taste and work the same.

The biggest difference is that the neufchatel is made using only milk  (23% milkfat), while cream cheese is made with milk and cream (33% milk fat) so it’s a little more fattening that the first.

How to Make Cucumber Sandwiches

This cucumber cream cheese sandwich is a breeze to make. Tea sandwiches in general are so simple, but everyone goes crazy for them!

  1. Whisk together the cream cheese, yogurt, lemon zest, vinegar, sugar, lemon juice, and dill. Sprinkle salt and pepper in to taste.
  2. Cut each bread slice into halves or quarters (it depends on how large you want your cucumber sandwiches with cream cheese to be).
  3. Spread a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture on each half of the bread, then place sliced cucumber on top.
  4. Repeat with the rest of the bread loaf and enjoy!

What to Serve with Cucumber Tea Sandwiches

If you are hosting a brunch or party (a Mother’s Day brunch or a bridal shower or baby shower) and serving these cucumber sandwiches, here are a few ideas for more finger foods to serve with them:

Can I Prep Cucumber Sandwiches in Advance?

You can pre-slice the cucumbers and whisk together the cream cheese spread up to 24 hours in advance. But I recommend waiting to assemble these little sandwiches until you’re ready to serve them.

Tips for Making Cucumber Tea Sandwiches

We prefer peeling the cucumber before slicing it, but you’re welcome to leave the skin on if desired.

Similarly, you’re welcome to use regular cream cheese instead of Neufchatel if that’s what you have on hand. Make sure it is at room temperature so that it creams together well with the other ingredients.

For a thicker, creamier spread, you’ll want to use full-fat cream cheese and full-fat Greek yogurt. You can probably use light versions of both if you want, but full-fat is our favorite.

How Long Will Cucumber Sandwiches Keep?

Once assembled, cucumber sandwiches will not keep for long. the bread starts to get soggy because cucumbers retain so much water. I recommend making the number of sandwiches that will be eaten. The cream cheese yogurt mixture can be made ahead of time and the cucumbers can be sliced. If everything is stored separately, they will keep in the fridge for a day or two.

Get ready to elevate your sandwich game with these delicious lemon dill cucumber sandwiches. Perfect for a light lunch or afternoon snack, these sandwiches are easy to make and bursting with flavor.

Looking for the perfect sloppy joe recipe? Look no further! This delicious and easy-to-follow recipe includes a video tutorial to help you create the best sloppy joes on the block.

All these years I’ve thought sloppy joes were the worst dinner ever, but after months of testing I’ve finally found a recipe I LOVE!

Every time I heard that we were having sloppy joes for lunch at school as a kid, I cringed.  I was never too excited for them at home either. Not knowing what was in the sloppy joes made it harder for me to eat — it should have been called “Mystery Joes” or something along those lines.

For years, we tried new recipes and each one was getting closer and closer to me finally accepting the sloppy mess of a meal. Everyone went crazy for them at school and families we knew loved them, clearly I was missing something.

We have finally found the best sloppy joe recipe EVER! Not just the best, but a totally crave-able recipe! It’s the perfect balance of sweet and salty and a little spicy.

Creating the Best Sloppy Joes Recipe

As a teenager, I watched Adam Sandler and Chris Farley perform “lunch lady land” on Saturday Night Live. Interestingly enough, this skit gave me a new outlook on sloppy joes, not sure why.

Well, a couple decades later this bad boy lands on my plate and a whole slew of feelings came rushing back: disgust, anxiety, unpleasant crunchy things, failure after failure of trying this recipe in the past, and almost complete despair of ever finding a sloppy joe recipe that actually tasted good.

Would this one be another flop? I sat down to the dinner table with that fake smile, that “thanks honey, this looks great” face on that I had nailed down over my childhood years. The smells began to hit my nostrils and to my surprise they were pleasant, smokey richness, grilled onions and peppers, almost like a bbq restaurant smell.

I began to feel a little excitement in this Mystery Joe. I went in for the first bite and it was all over from there, seconds and thirds landed on my plate and my taste buds were chest bumping each other.

What is a Sloppy Joe?

To be clear, a sloppy joe is not a sandwich with chili piled on top. A sloppy joe is a sandwich consisting of ground beef or pork, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun.

The dish originated in the United States during the early 20th century. According to legend, a cook named Joe at Floyd Angell’s café in Sioux City, Iowa, added tomato sauce to his “loose meat” sandwiches and the “sloppy joe” sandwich was born. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Sloppy Joe Ingredients

For this easy sloppy joe recipe, you’ll need a handful of ingredients. I bet most of these ingredients are in your pantry already! For the sloppy joe meat mixture, you’ll need…

  • Butter
  • Onion
  • Red Bell Pepper
  • Garlic
  • Ground Beef

Although you can’t have sloppy joes without the meat, the sloppy joe sauce is what really makes this recipe. For the sloppy joe sauce, you’ll need…

  • Brown Sugar
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Liquid Smoke
  • Ketchup
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Spices: chili powder, smoked paprika, salt and pepper

What makes this sloppy joe sauce so amazing is its blend of sweet and smoky flavors. The sauce has so much depth to it, which you wouldn’t expect for such a simple dinner recipe! The measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

How to Make Homemade Sloppy Joes

I’m not sure we could have made this sloppy joe recipe any easier! Here’s the basic rundown of how to make the best sloppy joes and how to make sloppy joe sauce:

  1. In a Dutch oven, sauté the onion in a little butter until translucent.
  2. Add the diced bell pepper and garlic and cook until fragrant.
  3. Add in the ground beef and cook until browned, stirring occasionally.
  4. The sloppy joe sauce ingredients are added next. Let the mixture simmer for a few minutes, or up to an hour.
  5. Scoop the sloppy joe mixture onto buttered buns and enjoy!

The complete instructions can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

Watch How These Sloppy Joes are Made…

Can I Make Sloppy Joes with Ground Turkey?

Absolutely! You can use pretty much any ground meat you’d like in these easy sloppy joes. If you’d like to use ground turkey in particular, we recommend making our Healthier Ground Turkey Sloppy Joes instead.

Can I Omit the Liquid Smoke?

We love the hint of smokiness it adds to this sloppy joe recipe, but you can omit it if you don’t have any on hand.

What is the Difference Between Manwich and Sloppy Joes?

Manwich is basically a brand of sloppy joes that you can buy at the grocery store. It comes in a can and just needs to be warmed up before serving it on buns. It’s an okay version of a sloppy joe, but making sloppy joes from scratch is far superior in my opinion!

Can I Make Sloppy Joes in a Slow Cooker?

Most definitely. You’ll need to brown the beef first, then you can add everything into the slow cooker and let it cook low and slow for up to three hours. You’ll need to stir it occasionally though! If you have a regular sized slow cooker, we recommend doubling this easy sloppy joe recipe to fill the entire thing.

Tips for the Best Sloppy Joes

We prefer using 80% lean ground beef to make these sloppy joes from scratch. You don’t want to use beef that’s too lean, as the fat adds lots of moisture and flavor to this dish.

The sloppy joe mixture can be prepped in advance and enjoyed the next day. Simply reheat on the stove or stick in a Crockpot to keep warm.

If needed, this easy sloppy joe recipe can be doubled or tripled to feed a crowd!

This recipe is super kid friendly, but eating a sloppy joe is not kid friendly at all. Haha! There’s nothing messier! So here’s my tip…break up the bun into the bite size pieces and scoop the filling over the top. It makes it much easier for the little to eat!

What Goes With Sloppy Joes?

Not sure what to serve with your sloppy joes from scratch? Here are a few of our favorite sloppy joes sides:

Storage Tips

Storing: Sloppy joe filling can be kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 4-5 days.

Freezing: Cool the sloppy joes filling completely in the refrigerator before you freeze it. Freeze it in labeled freezer bags and lay it flat in your freezer so you can stack your frozen meals. You can freeze it for 3 – 6 months.

Reheating: When you’re ready to eat the frozen sloppy joes filling, place it in the fridge overnight to thaw and then warm it on the stove.

You will love this easy dinner recipe! Homemade sloppy joes are pure comfort food that is inexpensive, hearty, beefy and bold in flavor.

This isn’t your average grilled cheese sandwich! We are combining 4 different cheeses with a flavored butter spread and an irresistible roasted jalapeño mayo to create a grilled Mexican cheese sandwich.

We live right by the mountains and have been loving grabbing the kids and heading up to the mountains to eat and hike or watch a movie. A full-of-flavor soup, like taco stew, is one of those hit-the-spot soups that warms you from the inside out but don’t stop there! Why not go crazy with a Mexican style grilled cheese full of cheese, a killer roasted jalapeno mayo and you guys, the cheesy butter spread on top… I may never leave my kitchen again!

What is soup if you don’t have something to sop up all that deliciousness with?! Taco stew, meet Mexican Grilled Cheese. Let’s fall in love.

Ingredients for Mexican Grilled Cheese

Get ready for all the cheeses, cheesy butter and roasted jalapeno mayo! Here is a list of all the ingredients you will need to make these indulgent sandwiches:

Sandwich: sourdough bread, Oaxaca cheese, cheddar cheese, Chihuahua cheese, and cotija cheese

Butter: unsalted butter, mayonnaise, cotija cheese, cheddar cheese, cilantro, and chili flakes

Mayo: mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, jalapeno, and red bell pepper

How to Make Mexican Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Making these sandwiches to gooey perfection is a little bit like a dance, so let’s get to the kitchen and start shaking a leg!

First, mix all the ingredients for the flavored butter together and set it aside. Then mix all the ingredients for the mayo together and set it aside. Then we will jump into assembling the sandwiches. This works best if you have all the cheese sliced and ready to go.

  1. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and butter one side of a slice of the bread with the butter. Put the buttered-side of the bread down on the skillet.
  2. Spread some of the mayo all over the other side of the bread.
  3. Top with half of the cheeses.
  4. Take another slice of bread and smear the mayo on one side. Put the saucy side of the bread down on top of the cheeses and butter the outside of the bread.
  5. Flip the sandwich once the side that is down on the skillet is golden brown. Let it cook on the second side until the cheese is all melty.
  6. Repeat these steps with the other two slices of bread and the remaining cheeses.
  7. Serve with soup!

Did you catch all those steps? It’s not too complicated, but you just want to make sure you get the butter and the sauce on the right sides of the bread and everything is done in the right order. You’re going to love this recipe!

What Kind of Bread is Best for Grilled Cheese?

We are all about a good quality sourdough bread like The Rustik Oven brand. It is so soft and chewy but also hearty enough to handle all the goodness packed into this grilled cheese sandwich. If you aren’t a sourdough lover, then a good white bread or french bread also work great.

What is Oaxaca Cheese?

Oaxaca cheese is also called quesillo or asadero cheese. It is a white cheese originating from Oaxaca, Mexico that is similar in flavor to Monterey Jack cheese but more like mozzarella cheese in texture. The flavor is buttery and slightly salty and it is great for melting. It balances the spicy flavor often found in Mexican food.

It has become more and more popular and can usually be found in large grocery store chains, but if you can’t find it, decent substitutes include mozzarella, Monterey jack, or Muenster.

What is Chihuahua Cheese?

Chihuahua cheese is made from cow’s milk and has a salty, mild and slightly sour flavor. It is great for cooking because it melts well and gets extra gooey. It originates in the Chihuahua region of northern Mexico.

I’ve actually had the most luck finding it at Costco, and occasionally I find it at Walmart and Kroger stores. If you can’t find it, medium cheddar cheese or Muenster are good substitutes.

How to Roast a Jalapeño

I am not a fan of spicy, but I am a huge fan of the flavor that jalapeños add to a dish so one way to calm the heat in a jalapeño is to roast it. Reduce the heat by heating it…makes no sense! But it works! You can roast jalapeños in the oven or on the stovetop.

Oven

  1. To roast in the oven, move your top rack to the very top position in your oven so that your baking sheet will be 3-4 inches from the top.
  2. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Clean and then dry your peppers and brush them with a little bit of canola oil. Sprinkle them with a little salt and then place them on a baking sheet.
  4. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and turn them every 4-5 minutes until they are charred on all sides.
  5. When they are charred all over, remove the peppers from the oven and immediately stick them in a plastic bag and seal the bag closed to steam them. Let them sit for at least 15 minutes.
  6. Remove the peppers from the bag. The skins should be easy to remove. Then you can remove the seeds if you want and proceed with your recipe.

Stovetop

  1. To roast on the stovetop, you must have a gas range.
  2. Clean and dry your peppers and brush them with a little canola oil. Sprinkle them with a little salt.
  3. Turn one burner on to medium heat and using tongs and an oven mitt, rotate each jalapeño over the flame until it chars and blisters on all sides.
  4. Place the charred peppers into a plastic bag to let them steam for at least 15 minutes.
  5. The skins on the peppers should then be easy to remove. Remove the seeds if desired and use in your recipe.

What to Eat with Grilled Mexican Cheese Sandwiches

You could eat this grilled Mexican cheese sandwich all on its own, but why would you do that if you can dip it in a delicious soup?! A few of our favorite soups for dipping this grilled cheese sandwich with a Mexican makeover are our taco stew (like I mentioned at the beginning), our cheesy southwestern chicken tortilla soup, our classic chicken tortilla soup or our enchilada chili

If you want to go with a lighter side dish, try our grilled Mexican street corn (elote), elote corn salad, or our tasty avocado salad.

Can Grilled Mexican Cheese Sandwiches Be Made Ahead of Time?

This is one of those meals that is best eaten fresh and right off the pan. The cheese is melty and gooey. The bread is crunchy on the outside and saucy on the inside. It doesn’t save well, so eat it hot!

Four cheeses, perfect sourdough bread, a flavored butter and a roasted jalapeno mayo all come together to make the most outrageously delicious grilled Mexican cheese sandwich!

Notes

Jalapeños can be roasted in the oven or on the stove top. To use the oven, preheat the oven to 450 degrees F and move the rack to the top slot. Rub the peppers in a little canola oil and sprinkle with salt and place them on a baking sheet. Place in the oven and turn the peppers every few minutes until charred on all sides.
To roast them on the stove top, you have to have a gas range. Start the flame and place the pepper right on the burner and turn it until charred on all sides. Whether you use the oven or stove top, once they are charred, place the peppers in the ziploc bag while they are still hot and seal the bag. Let them sit for 15 minutes. Then remove the skins. You can remove the seeds if you want to and then slice the peppers.

Make the most out of your Thanksgiving leftovers with this mouthwatering sandwich recipe. Filled with all your favorite holiday flavors, this leftover turkey sandwich is the perfect way to use up those extra turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce leftovers.

Inspiration for the Gobbler

Cade and I had noticed a little bread and sandwich shop in kind of an awkward little corner of a shopping area when our first daughter was just a little toddler. We’d passed it so many times and had become quite curious about it. I’d never been a fan of cranberry sauce nor stuffing but I’ll tell you what, this shop literally changed me.

A very nice man was there one evening when we stopped in and to this day it breaks my heart to remember him and his little dream he was trying to build. We bought some cinnamon bread for French toast and asked which sandwich to buy. He raved about his thanksgiving sandwich so we dove in.

My gosh, it was the most satisfying thing I’d ever sunk my teeth into. The flavors, the texture. All of it! I hate that his shop never took off. The bread and sandwiches were legit amazing. I think the location just killed the possibilities, but for me, it was the best of the best.

What Do I Need to Make a Leftover Turkey Sandwich?

It’s not every day that a sandwich or dish gets its own name. We have “The Soup” which is our most popular soup recipe here on the blog, and our Busy Day Casserole which has been a top performer for years. This leftover turkey sandwich needed it’s own name. It’s that good! The Gobbler was born! Pull out your Thanksgiving leftovers and here is everything you will need:

  • White Bread
  • Leftover Stuffing
  • Turkey Gravy
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Leftover Turkey
  • Shredded Lettuce
  • Mayo or Honey Mustard

What Type of Bread to Use

Usually I’m all about the multi-grain bread with loads of seeds and crunchies in it, but for this recipe, it’s all about the plain ol’ white bread. You want a good quality white bread that will hold up to all the delicious layers that will go into this sandwich. Sourdough bread would also be a delicious option!

How to Make the Gobbler

I love this sandwich recipe because I can use up leftovers in a creative and delicious way and it’s so quick and easy! Here are the basic steps:

  1. Warm: Reheat the turkey, stuffing and gravy.
  2. Spread: Slather both slices of bread with may or honey mustard (or both).
  3. Layer: Add a layer of lettuce, sliced turkey, stuffing, a drizzle of gravy, and then cranberry sauce. Top with the other slice of bread.
  4. Serve: Serve immediately!

Tips for the Best Leftover Thanksgiving Sandwich

After many years of Thanksgiving leftovers under my belt (literally, ha!), I’ve learned a few tricks for making the best sandwich using leftovers.

  • Using gravy on the sandwich is a nonnegotiable! It adds that classic Thanksgiving flavor and helps keep the sandwich from being too dry.
  • Mayonnaise and/or mustard on both bread slices is highly recommended. We love the taste of honey mustard the most, but use any type of mustard you love.
  • I know people are anti-turkey for Thanksgiving, so if you have leftover, use that instead! Or use both turkey and ham!
  • I prefer my leftover Thanksgiving sandwich with the turkey, stuffing and gravy warmed up, but you can try it with them cold. Except maybe not the gravy…cold gravy…eww, no thanks!
  • The cranberry sauce is optional. For some people, it is an essential flavor of Thanksgiving, but I know some people are against it, so just skip it if you want.

Variations for the Gobbler

I honestly wouldn’t change anything on this sandwich, but if you want to augment the sandwich a little, you could add a couple slices of cheese. Pepper jack would honestly be delicious, or provolone, Havarti or white cheddar would all be amazing!

I haven’t ever tried it, but I’ve seen some people add mashed potatoes to their leftover Thanksgiving sandwich, so that might be a tasty addition too!

What to Eat with a Leftover Turkey Sandwich

If you’re eating this sandwich for lunch after Thanksgiving day, then you don’t need anything else to go with it. It is so hearty and filling that it’s all you need. Unless you are a chip lover, then a bag of crunchy potato chips is a great option!

If you’re scaling this recipe up and making several sandwiches for a crowd, then you could serving a delicious roasted butternut squash and kale salad or our harvest cobb salad on the side. Ooh, a winter fruit salad would be great too!

Since it’s Thanksgiving, then you better eat a slice of leftover pumpkin pie or razzleberry pie with it too!

Does The Gobbler Store Well?

Unfortunately this turkey sandwich does not store well. The bread gets soggy quite quickly so it is best to eat fresh. Warm up just enough of the turkey, stuffing and gravy you will need for the sandwich(es) you plan to make.

Don’t let your Thanksgiving leftovers go to waste! Transform them into the ultimate turkey sandwich, also known as The Gobbler. It’s like a full Thanksgiving meal in every bite! This delicious recipe will have you looking forward to leftovers every year.
